Abstract:
Originally conceptualized as "conversion to forestry", this threat layer evolved significantly during the development process of this threats assessment. Due to insufficient data on forestry activities and non-consistent policies and definitions of forestry throughout the continent this threat layer changed to try to capture aspects of vegetation removal, specifically directed at activities such as extraction and selective logging from natural forests. Finally, the threat layer was conceptualized as representing "recent conversion", reflected in the loss of green vegetation in the land surface from 1998 to present. This captures both deforestation in forests and degradation of natural ecosystems due to conversion or extraction.

To represent geographically severity and scope of the threat upon the conservation of biodiversity in South America
Supplemental_Information:
The SACR science team has been tasked to develop a continental threat assessment to complement the continental priorities assessment that was completed last year. Threat datasets will be used by SACR to refine ecoregional priorities so that they are based on actual threats, inform threat abatement and conservation strategies of the SACR Conservation Programs, and form the basis of an early warning system for major threats to biodiversity that may occur and for which we would need to prepare abatement strategies. Assessing and monitoring threats to the biodiversity in South America is a task composed of different components that can be summarized as follows: Design and create an information system capable of spatially representing the geographic distribution of threats. Model the severity and scope of these threats to provide information about how biodiversity targets (ecosystems) are altered, deteriorated or lost. Create an early warning (biodiversity risk) information system that is capable of providing updated information on predicted tendencies for threats (i.e.; past and current threat data will be used in conjunction with threat forecasting models).
