Abstract:
The Small Area Estimates of Poverty and Inequality dataset consists of spatially referenced consumption-based measures of poverty and inequality for subnational administrative areas of various countries throughout Africa, Asia, Europe, North America and South America. These measures are derived, on a country-level basis, from a combination of census and survey data using small area estimation techniques developed for poverty mapping. The collection of data sets have been compiled, integrated and standardized from the original data providers into a unified, spatially referenced and globally consistent dataset. The data products include shapefiles (vector data), tabular datasets (in comma seperated values format) and centroids (comma seperated values file with latitude and longitude of a geographic unit and associated poverty estimates). Additionally, a data catalog (in Excel format) contains detailed information and documentation on each data set in the collection. The collection is produced by the Columbia University Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN) in collaboration with a number of external data providers. |
Metadata elements shown with blue text are defined in the Federal Geographic Data Committee's (FGDC) Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata (CSDGM). Elements shown with green text are defined in the ESRI Profile of the CSDGM. Elements shown with a green asterisk (*) will be automatically updated by ArcCatalog. ArcCatalog adds hints indicating which FGDC elements are mandatory; these are shown with gray text.

To provide highly resolved subnational estimates of poverty and inequality for use by a wide user community for interdisciplinary studies of poverty, inequality and the environment.
This is the first version (Version 1.0) of the Small Area Estimates data set. If you discover any errors or have any comments regarding the dataset please contact ciesin.info@ciesin.columbia.edu. FILE TYPE The file is in comma separated variable format (csv). This is a tabular data format that can be used in spreadsheet, database and GIS applications. FIELDS For a description of available fields, for a given country and administrative level, please see the Small Area Estimate Datasets catalog available at http://www.ciesin.columbia.edu/povmap/ds_info.html MISSING DATA Blank spaces in fields indicate missing data values. POVERTY LINE The following is a summary of the poverty line(s) used by data providers in the construction of poverty estimates: Indonesia Currency: Rupiah Value: The values are: 84 region-specific poverty lines delineated by total country and province and rural/urban/total area of residence. The values of provinces' poverty lines range from 71008 to 102814 per person per month. For rural areas, the poverty lines range from 70199 to 100169 per person per month. For urban areas, the poverty lines range from 74087 to 102814 per person per month. For total country, the poverty line is 84537 per person per month, with values of 81184 per capita per month for rural areas and 90490 per capita per month for rural areas.
