Improved
Mapping and Spatial Analysis of Food Security and Poverty
in Ecuador
 Almost
one fifth of Ecuador's inhabitants are undernourished (FAO,
1999 ) and over a quarter of children under 5 years of age
are affected by chronic malnutrition (Larrea et al, 2001 ).
The need for national level assessments of food insecurity
is therefore very high. This project will identify the lack
of access to food within Ecuador and test hypotheses regarding
the causes of food insecurity in Ecuador. This will be achieved
by identifying how access to food varies spatially, how access
to food varies temporally, and crucially, how the factors
that contribute to food insecurity change over space and time.
This project aims to benefit many different institutions in
both targeting their resources and their research, specifically
the capacity of the Ecuadorian government to design policy
or development interventions necessary to improve food security.

Poverty
alleviation is central to the mission of the CGIAR and other
development organizations. Yet knowledge about where poverty
and food insecurity exists, and what are their modifiable
drivers, is still deficient. This is partially because of
a historic dearth of appropriate information. But, as the
volume of data increased, it related more to our inability
to access it, analyze it, and communicate the results to people
who need them. Out of this was created the Consortium for
Spatial Information (
Poverty
mapping in Honduras represents an advance in the analysis
of causality factors. This work is a significant step towards
harmonizing the perceptions of poverty from the "top"
(international development organizations) and "bottom"
(local), by providing a methodology for extrapolating locally
derived indicators up to country-level.
