Metadata
consist of information that characterizes data. Metadata are
used to supply information on the data produced. In essence,
metadata try to respond to the questions who, what, when, where,
why, and how, on each one of the relative facets to the data
that are documented.
The production of georeferenced information in CIAT has achieved
its objectives with respect to the management that these require
regarding their production and updating. Consequently, the data
are used by the different projects or users that require them.
Taking
into account the importance of the production of information,
in recent years the need has arisen to organize these data
both for access and diffusion. Thus, at the start of this
year, CIAT is participating both in organizing and facilitating
the International Seminar of National Infrastructures of Spatial
Data and Metadata Workshop.
Considering
international standards, CIAT has chosen to work with the
standard of the Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) (Content
Standards for Digital Geospatial Metadata) for the production
of the metadata. Consequently, we can have georeferenced information
for publication and/or exchange data with other organizations.
To create the metadata we use the METALITE tool that allows
us to enter the most minimum data that a metadata should have
and to generate various formats (HTML, SGML, TEXT).
A
metadata is a detailed data of the information produced, this
being a value added to the information, which permits the
documentation of data that will serve to support those who
use the information that the project has available. Metadata
contain basic information on the data such as, for example,
information of who publishes the data, how they are organized,
who distributes them, and their restrictions. The information
described in a metadatum should be complete and correct.
You
can access some of the metadata that have been generated.
