Highlights
of Ongoing Projects
DIVA-GIS
(with IPGRI and the U. of California, Berkeley) - I am
a co-author on the software DIVA-GIS, available for free and
designed to perform spatial analysis of biological collections.
Information about DIVA-GIS is available from the website.

Genetic
diversity modelling in plant species (with IPGRI) - I
have been involved in some work on predicting the spatial
distribution of genetic diversity through spatial analysis
of environmental heterogeneity with Sam Yeaman.

SRTM
digital elevation data - The release of 90m digital elevation
models (DEMs) for the entire globe marks a potential revolution
in environmental modelling and terrain analysis, permitting
micro-scale models to be potentially applied at the global
level. I have invested a lot of time into exploring SRTM data,
and producing a seamless global dataset with no-data holes
filled in. This is now available through the CSI-CGIAR SRTM
Data Portal. Work is now focusing on evaluating the potential
of SRTM data for terrain analysis in biodiversity studies
and site-specific agriculture, and I am collaborating with
Bernhard Lehner in the WWF-Washington office on the production
of global stream and flow accumulation surfaces.

National Atlases of Plant Genetic Resources (with IPGRI
and the USDA) - I have been working on projects examining
the spatial distribution of biological resources in a country,
to enable informed conservation policy decisions at the national
scale. Work has started on Bolivia, and a provisional Atlas
is now available based on the servers of the Fundacion Amigos
de la Naturaleza (FAN), and I am now focusing on Guatemala
and Paraguay. The Atlases contain information on germplasm
and herbarium collections of species with cultural or economic
importance, and perform spatial analyses to identify the potential
distribution of each species, and priority areas for ex situ
and in situ conservation actions. The natural progression
for this work is to extend it to the continental level, and
I am interested in hearing from people interested in collaborating.
