Title: Income Poverty, Vitamin A and Iodine in Nigeria
Abstract:
Two country-wide surveys, one on rural livelihoods, poverty and food demand, and the other on food consumption and child nutrition, were carried out in Nigeria by IITA, and some results were mapped in order to test the feasibility of extrapolation by small area estimation and geostatistics and assist interpretation of the results. The lack of reliable recent census statistics in Nigeria complicates the process of mapping socio-economic variables. The Small Area Estimation technique has been adapted for regression of poverty and nutrition indicators against biophysical and socio-economic variables such as rainfall, soil fertility and travel time to markets and applied to groups of Nigerian States. Where no significant correlation was observed, values were interpolated geostatistically. The study showed that it was possible to map this type of socio-economic variable even where reliable census data was not available, although statistically valid confidence levels could not be determined. Three major areas of serious poverty were identified in Nigeria; in south-west Nigeria, in the north-central portion of the country, and in the far north-east. The richest rural areas in Nigeria appear to be in the western parts of Benue and Bauchi States. Iodine deficiency in children is most common in the south-west, centre, and extreme north, while Vitamin A deficiency in children is prevalent in the south-west and north-east.

Why was the data set created?

Poverty and malnutrition are persistent problems in Africa. Alleviation of these closely-related socio-economic problems must be guided by knowledge of their spatial distribution and relationships to biophysical and development factors.
