About CIAT

The International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) is a not-for-profit organization that conducts socially and environmentally progressive research aimed at reducing hunger and poverty and preserving natural resources in developing countries. CIAT is one of the 15 centers funded mainly by the 58 countries, private foundations, and international organizations that make up the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR).

Areas of Expertise:

In recent years CIAT has organized its diverse project portfolio around three new initiatives, called research-for-development challenges:

(1) Enhancing and Sharing the Benefits of Agrobiodiversity,
(2) Improving Agroecosystem Health in the Tropics, and
(3) Enhancing Rural Innovation.

Responding to development issues of global significance, these three initiatives serve as the cardinal points that give strategic direction to our research.

Opportunities for Students

CIAT offers a variety of opportunities for students: in 2005 CIAT hosted over 180 students at headquarters who collaborated in numerous projects. Half of them were from Colombia and the other half comes from all over the world. Additional students work alongside CIAT staff in one of its 15 regional offices in Africa, Asia and Latin America. So far CIAT has hosted 8 Austrian students at headquarters from varios universities, but there are other students, mainly from the University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences (Universität für Bodenkultur) who are involved in CIAT projects in Uganda, Mozambique and Laos  (e.g.: Tina Ehgartner (DA): Research topics: Reasons for being an innovation performer in organic farming production systems. A case study in Ntenjero sub-county, Uganda.  Elisabeth Gotschi (DISS): Farmer Groups in Rural Mozambique: Development of Civil Society in the Smallhoder Sector. A Case Study from Búzi District.  Maria Miguel Ribeiro (DISS): Socio-economic factors influencing the improvement of supply chains of non-timber forest products in Oudomxay (Laos).  The main contact at Boku is Dr. Michael Hauser:

How are Students going to be financed?

Over the years CIAT had hosted many students from Europe, but up to 2004, none had come from Austria. CIAT decided to reallocate a small residual amount received from the Austrian Ministry of Finance in 2003 for the purpose to improve Austrian-CIAT relations and to partially fund interns from Austria. Norbert Niederhauser and Susanne Schmid were the first students arriving in 2004. Since then 7 more students have decided to broaden their horizon through an internship at CIAT.
