The Project has produced 50 copies of edited geographic information
systems (GIS) data coverages as a CD-ROM entitled "Atlas
de Honduras", and 2000 copies of a second version, "Atlas
de Honduras: Datos Mitch" (or the "Mitch Atlas").
The
CD-ROM opens with a friendly menu-driven interface to a large
collection of coverages. These include Food and Agriculture
Organisation (FAO) and Simmons soils, geology, rivers, watersheds
at several levels, roads, counter lines, slope, hypsometry,
climate (monthly rainfall, minimum and maximum temperature),
recommended land use, land use capacity, forestry, high-resolution
land use for 1986 and 1994, mangroves, wetlands, and ecofloristic
zones. They also include Olson ecosystems, protected areas,
population and density for 1986 and 1988, education, poverty,
annual and permanent crops by area and production, farming
systems, the 1988 Population and Housing Census, and 1993
Agricultural Census at unit level (individual, household or
farm, depending on the census). We constructed a friendly,
menu-driven interface where users can select and combine coverages,
query the databases, and apply some advanced GIS functions
such as spatial joins or buffers. A tutorial is included in
the distribution CD-ROM.
Datos Mitch
CIAT
has been working with various donors and collaborators from
the projects and planning after Hurricane Mitch (October 1998).
Many new datasets have been generated based on specific demand
from aid agencies in Honduras, and have been made available
on the Atlas CD-ROM.
