Homologue is a computer program that assists scientists in identifying homologous environments (similar sites) throughout the tropical world.
A farmer might ask, "What crop can I grow on this field?" Homologue will take the latitude, longitude, and elevation of the field, and basic data on the soil characteristics, and map out wherever else in the tropics is like the field. Agricultural scientists can then advise on possibilities based on what crops are grown in these areas.
Homologue can also analyse a number of sites where a variety or crop does well in the form of a probability map, and produce the envelope of environments where good results might be expected, shown as a probability map. This map is useful when the crop adaptation is not tied to a specific climate.
